One of the best and most enjoyable parts of my job is that I am constantly being sent books and new programs to review and read. Where most people would find this to be overwhelming, I love learning new nutrition concepts and love reading the most current health information.
I can’t say that everything that is sent my way is great…trust me, I’ve gotten some pretty bad stuff in my day (and the only reason why I’m not listing the bad ones is because I’m afraid they may be reading my newsletter), but usually I am able to decipher through the good and the bad pretty quickly.
This weekend I spent most of my time reading a new program called “The Shapeshifter” Academy where Adam Steer, advanced level personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach, lays out all the essential tools and steps you must use for permanent and simple fat loss.
What I loved about reading this program is that it reminded me that there are a lot of “basics” and essential steps people need to remember when beginning and following any fat loss program. I think sometimes we get so bogged down in itty bitty details that are really not very important. What’s really important is the stuff that may seem obvious, but that we’re really not doing.
What I also loved about this program is that Adam goes into much more than just nutrition and exercise strategies. What a lot of people don’t realize is that their lifestyle could be the real reason they’re not able to lose their unwanted weight or see any results even when they think “they’re doing it all right”.

With that being said, I decided to create a simple checklist you can use to ensure that you are covering these essential “basics” and not getting all worked up in the crazy details.
What is also really great about Adam’s Shapeshifter Academy is that he outlines easy steps for every single day of the program. He gives you a detailed workout, nutrition plan and lifestyle strategies on a daily basis so you don’t become overwhelmed with information and know what to do each day.
If you’re the type of person that needs to know exactly what to do to accomplish your weight loss and health goals on a DAILY basis, you may want to read a bit more about Adam’s program here.

With that being said, I decided to create a simple checklist you can use to ensure that you are covering these essential “basics” and not getting all worked up in the crazy details.
- Get 6-8 hours of sleep each night. I know, I know…”What are you crazy Isabel?” Trust me I get it. I’ve got a little guy who takes up the majority of my waking hours and when he goes to bed, then it’s time to do everything else. Yeah, it’s not easy, but if you are extremely sleep deprived, your body will go into “super stress” mode and will hold on to fat like there is no tomorrow. Start out with a small goal of getting in a good night’s sleep 2 days a week and then bump it up to 3 and then 4. You’ll be sleeping like a baby in no time (I don’t know who made that up because babies do NOT sleep.)
- Set specific GOALS for yourself to accomplish each week. Yup, now I’ve gone “Tony Robbins” on you, but if you’re going to accomplish anything in this lifetime, you’ve got to set some goals. I have a “goals” sheet that I work off of every single day. This makes me feel more accomplished than saying it is a “to do” list and makes me much more excited to accomplish what’s on that list each day.
- Surround yourself with people who want to SUCCEED. Yes, now I also decided that I’m going to pick your friends for you too. But in all seriousness, this can make a dramatic difference in accomplishing your goals and enjoying your success. Who are your cheerleaders? Who do you go to when times get tough? Is it someone who’s going to help pick you up or is it someone who’s just going to bring you down even further? I don’t know about you, but happy people make me happy and successful people make me feel motivated so I do my best to surround myself with those people as much as possible.
- Walk, walk, walk and then walk some more. This one goes out to all of those people who constantly tell me “Isabel, I have no time to make it to the gym” or “I have no time for exercise”. I know you’ve probably heard this a million times, but just get out there and walk. Park further in the parking lot, go to the mall and walk (no ladies, I didn’t say go to the mall and shop) and take the stairs whenever possible. This is not a revolutionary concept, but are you doing it? Or are you guilty of circling the parking lot for an hour just to get the closest spot? Just get up and move and that will undoubtedly make a big difference in your weight loss success.
What is also really great about Adam’s Shapeshifter Academy is that he outlines easy steps for every single day of the program. He gives you a detailed workout, nutrition plan and lifestyle strategies on a daily basis so you don’t become overwhelmed with information and know what to do each day.
